MvG tops the closest ever PDC Premier League

Mighty Michael van Gerwen tops the Premier League in what is the closest fought year ever and halfway to Judgement Night where one player will be eliminated.

Ahead of Week 5 we take a look into what is shaping to be the most exciting event in the Premier League of darts to date.

Although reigning Champion Michael van Gerwen finds himself in familiar territory on top of the Premier League table, he is not totally happy with his overall game and has re-iterated on several occasions that he has plenty more to bring.

However, five players remain in close pursuit sat just one point behind the current World no.1 – with Nathan Aspinall leading the pack level on points and behind MvG on leg difference.

Speaking about this year’s campaign Michael said “It’s been an interesting start with a lot of great games and on the whole I’ve been pleased with how I’ve played but not ecstatic.

“Obviously I’ve still been getting used to new darts but I'm starting to feel that I’m not far away from really showing what I’m capable of and opening up a bigger lead at the top”

“My goal is always to win the Premier League but I also always want to finish top of the league stage – you can’t argue with whoever finishes top being the most consistent over the tournament and it’s what I strive for”

On the opposite end of the spectrum Daryl Gurney finds himself bottom of the league table with just 1 point after a stuttering start from the Northern Irish star.

However, due to the tight nature of this year’s league he finds himself just 4 points behind the coveted top 4 spot, which earns qualification to the play-offs.

Daryl is ready to target a season revival and said “Obviously I wanted a much better start and bar one, all of my performances warranted better results and points”

“I’ve been working really hard on my technique and starting to feel my confidence growing, but I still need results very quickly to put a good run of form together so then anything is possible”

With the infamous “Judgement Night” looming where the bottom player is eliminated before the second round of fixtures, Superchin needs to start picking up points starting with his match against Rob Cross on Thursday.

“Avoiding elimination is obviously the first goal and I need to play well to escape, but I know I’ve got the game to do that and to take that momentum into the back-end of the season and push for a spot at the O2”
