Winmau, the world’s leading darts brand, and the Icelandic Darts Association (IDA) have announced the renewal of a three-year sponsorship agreement along with details for the 2018 Winmau Iceland Open, the country’s premier event.
Formed in 1985, the IDA comprises five associations spread across the country with approximately 170 members who compete in annual Icelandic Championships competitions in 301, 501 and Cricket formats.
The IDA also holds inter-association team tournaments, an event for over 50s and a televised Champion of Champions competition in which each association is represented by a squad of their best players. A monthly points system also enables individual players to qualify for the Icelandic national team.
Now, with Winmau’s backing for a further three years, the IDA’s biggest tournament is set to be even bigger and better than before. The 2018 Winmau Iceland Open is scheduled to take place between March 30 and April 1 and is rated as a Men’s and Women’s BDO Category D and WDF Rank three event. “Darts is really taking off in Iceland,” said IDA president Ólafur Guðmundsson. “Last year we appointed our first youth coach and sent a youth team to the European Cup for the first time. Over the last three years IDA players have started to compete overseas – we had 35 players take part in the Scottish Open last year.”
The support of Iceland’s television broadcaster, Sport Tv, which regularly shows live darts, has contributed to the growth of darts in Iceland. In October Iceland will host the PDC’s Nordic Baltic tournament.
“Winmau’s support has been the catalyst for the IDA to really break new ground,” says Ólafur. “The company’s support over the last three years has been tremendous and has really boosted darts in Iceland. The brand is synonymous with the global game and already a firm favourite with many of our players. We can’t wait for the 2018 Winmau Iceland Open and look forward to partnering with the company for the next three years.”
Winmau’s Sales and Marketing Director, Ian Flack, added: “For such a small country, Iceland has some prodigious talent. Under the guidance of the IDA, the players benefit from a solid structure which not only encourages the further development of its best players, but nurtures emerging talent for the future. Renewing our relationship with the IDA was a really easy decision.”
