Daryl Gurney continued his pursuit of a Premier League play-off place with a stunning 8-5 win over World no. 1 Michael van Gerwen last night.
The Northern Irishman raced to an early 4-0 lead before MvG began a fight back. Superchin would keep the Dutchman at arms length at 6-2 and secured a point at 7-4. MvG punished a missed match dart at D18 to make the score 7-5 before Gurney hit D20 for the win.
This was Daryl's third consecutive TV win over the reigining Premier League champion and keeps him in touching distance of a top four place with 16 pts.
Rob Cross took advantage of Mighty Mike’s defeat to move back to the summit of the table with a 8-1 win over Michael Smith. Smith’s chances of reaching the play-offs had already gone before this defeat and narrowly avoided a whitewash as he hit D16 in leg 6.
Both James Wade and Mensur Suljovic consolidated their spot in the top four with wins over Gerwyn Price and Peter Wright.
Despite hitting three ton-plus finishes, Peter Wright struggled against Suljovic who picked up the 8-6. Price also struggled on the Manchester stage and James Wade kept his cool to win that contest 8-4.
Price is next up for Gurney as the Premier League hits Sheffield, with both men on the cusp of a Play-off place. It’s a must win for Gurney as he looks to chase Wade and Suljovic for a spot at the O2.
