Bullseye Maths was introduced by the PDC in 2022 after studies found that numeracy levels amongst children had been affected during the Covid-19 pandemic, with the scheme supported by family numeracy charity Maths on Toast.
Alongside an online Bullseye Maths portal at the PDC website, popular in-school sessions have been developed and run by staff from Nottingham College’s Room 180 Academy - with 20 being held so far to encourage maths learning through a combination of numeracy exercises and darts-based games.
The sessions have been running alongside some of the PDC’s biggest events and also featured participation from top players - including Winmau stars Joe Cullen, Daryl Gurney, Steve Beaton and Brendan Dolan. Further Red Dragon player Peter Wright.
Bullseye Maths has received hugely positive feedback, including being included as a downloadable resource during Maths Week England in 2022 and shortlisted in the “Best Sports Community or CSR Scheme - Other Sports” category in the prestigious Sports Business Awards in 2023.
Bullseye Maths is set to continue its growth moving into 2024 and beyond to encourage numeracy across all ages and engage a new generation in the sport.
Gary Horsley, from Nottingham College’s Room 180 Academy, has led the in-school sessions and said: “We’ve enjoyed some incredible feedback since launching Bullseye Maths and it’s been a privilege to take this scheme around the UK during the past 18 months and to have the support of so many top players.
“Everywhere we’ve been, the pupils have really applied themselves to developing their confidence and skills in maths when applied to darts.
“To have received the nomination in the 2023 Sports Business Awards is a proud moment, and has only strengthened our plans to grow Bullseye Maths further in the coming years.”
Bullseye Maths was developed by the PDC in partnership with Soapbox London, Nottingham College’s Room 180 Academy, the Junior Darts Corporation, Maths On Toast, and GoDartsPro, whose interactive Mathlete game can be played at the PDC’s Bullseye Maths portal at www.pdc.tv/maths, which also offers downloadable worksheets and videos with darts personalities discussing numeracy.
In-school sessions are played on Winmau Greenzone dartboards and also feature specially-designed Winmau surrounds.
