Winmau, the world’s leading darts brand, is to partner with Oche, which promises to be Norway’s most innovative darts venue when it opens in Oslo next month.
Under the agreement, Winmau will provide their class-leading equipment, including Blade 5 dartboards, for all 20 oches that will be used as part of an incredible automatic scoring system for bristle dartboards that will spawn an urban darts revolution.
“The system uses proprietary camera-based scoring technology that has been many years in the making,” says Oche’s founder, Geir Oterhals. “This technology allows for many different games to be played by multiple players, and our goal is to bring the fun and social side of the sport to the people of Norway.”
The venue, which will also have a full food and drinks menu, plans to run a regular league on Mondays for both 501 and Cricket competitions. According to Oterhals, a ranking system is also planned as well as other tournaments.
Based on his success in making the sport of shuffleboard popular across Norway, Oterhals says he has been looking at a concept to increase the number of people playing darts as well. A keen amateur player himself, he believes there is huge passion for the sport in the country just waiting to be encouraged.
“We are very excited to be partnering with Geir and his team at Oche to offer players a different social experience,” says Winmau’s Sales and Marketing Director, Ian Flack. “There are development plans in place to take the Oche concept to more locations, and we have no doubt that this new venture will prove to be a huge hit with both regular players and non-players alike.”
Oterhals added: “There are some good players in Norway, but darts is something of a minority sport at the moment. Like anything else, success has to be built at the grass roots level and we are injecting fun into the sport that will hopefully encourage more people to enjoy what only the sport of darts can offer. It’s great having Winmau as a part of our journey, and to be providing the players with the finest equipment on the market.”
Oche will be open to the public on the 18th of October 2018.
