Winmau’s Steve Beaton dropped just one leg in his encounter with World Champion Rob Cross to set-up a second round meeting with Gerwyn Price.
The Bronzed Adonis handed Cross his second consecutive first round defeat in the tournament, as he proved to be more clinical on the doubles.
Gerwyn Price defeated Danny Noppert to proceed into the last-16 despite a strong second set fight-back from the Dutchman. Noppert missed two valuable darts at double to take the tie to a deciding set before Price pinned double 5 to win 2-0.
Last year’s finalist Simon Whitlock saw his run come to an abrupt end as he lost his opening encounter with James Wilson. The Wizard of Oz looked impress as he took the opening set but Wilson rallied to comfortably win the next two sets and win 2-1.
Adrian Lewis and Michael Smith put on arguably the match of the night, with Jackpot coming out on top 2-1. There were 13 maximums thrown between the two players in a tie that went right down to a deciding set. Lewis showed his nerve and experience to win the final leg after Smith had missed 3 match darts at double 12 for the win.
Two-time winner James Wade crashed out to an in-form Mensur Suljovic whilst second seed Peter Wright defeated Steve West 2-0. Jermaine Wattimena and Ian White also made their way into the last-16 with 2-0 wins over Mervyn King and Josh Payne respectively.
