Winmau, the world’s leading darts brand, has entered an exclusive partnership with the Webcam Darts Association (WDA). The WDA is the brainchild of Gareth Ainsworth who originally set up DartProLeague 5 years ago as a means for Gareth and his friends to play against each other via the Internet.
The momentum that quickly gathered was impressive and the decision was made to create the Webcam Darts Association in January this year.
The WDA is completely free to join and is run by Gareth along with his developer (Tim Hawkes) and administrators (Dave Hopkins/Andrew Hare). A dedicated team of volunteers are also on hand to ensure various aspects of the site are maintained efficiently. It boasts impressive membership numbers and has numerous organised leagues and tournaments that encompass countries from all around the world.
With a superb statistical package that allows members to track their progress over time and the facility to broadcast all matches via YouTube, the WDA has already streamed 23,000 matches since January this year!
Gareth Ainsworth said “I made a joke to the members earlier in the year that when we broadcast our 100,000th match, we would offer a free trip to Bournemouth and when we reached 1 million it would be a trip to Las Vegas! I’m regretting that now! The growth we have seen over the past couple of years has really shocked me, and it was a nice recognition of our efforts when Winmau contacted us to get involved. To have such a huge and well respected brand in darts backing the WDA is truly exceptional, and we know that we will be able to offer this unique free service to more people than ever before with their help”.
Ian Flack, Sales and Marketing Director of Winmau, added “The WDA is a well-organised, well-run association that has been created purely for the love of the sport. More than that, it is also a great social hub for its members and it provides a central point for organised, competitive webcam darts on a daily basis. Gareth and his team have worked extremely hard to develop the software and WDA community, and we look forward to helping them expand this to our global database.”
