Winmau TV and Kanal Sport to Broadcast DDU 1st Division matches!

Winmau TV and leading Danish broadcaster Kanal Sport will be broadcasting 15 transmissions from the best Danish division from late August 2013 to mid-spring 2014.

The Danish 1st Division consists of 12 teams geographically spread all over the country – every team has 4 players and they all play each other, so that a match consists of 16 singles matches of 501 best of five legs (i.e. first to three legs).

The transmissions last 2½ hours, during which time 8 of the 16 individual matches are shown – while the other 8 are played are played in a lane right next to the TV lane.

The first live transmission will be streamed on October 24th at 7.00pm UK time via  http://www.winmau.com/sec/1391/WINMAU_TV/ and www.kanalsport.dk as well as on air on Kanal Sport’s TV channel to more than 750,000 households in Denmark. This will be preceded by a documentary at 6.30pm.

The TV deal is to be seen as an attempt to actively advance the public interest for the sport in Denmark and to boost the Danish Darts Union’s (DDU’s) membership base.

The Danish Darts Union was founded in 1965 and is the official darts organisation in Denmark. They are members of the World Darts Federation (WDF) and the DDU is officially sponsored by Winmau.

Darts as a sport already has a lot of attention in Denmark, but hitherto this has only been major international events from abroad. Now the best Danish players will take to the Danish television screens and be streamed across the planet via Winmau TV and Kanal Sport.

The Danish 1st division holds the vast majority of the players that have represented Denmark internationally over the last couple of decades – both at major international events and via the national teams.

Apart from the live transmissions, the TV deal also covers a number of documentaries to be aired on Kanal Sport as well.

“The clubs and players in the 1st Division are eagerly looking forward to helping advance our sport through TV performances. Several of the players have upped the ante in their training as well as started practicing with particular focus on their TV appearances in order to give the viewers the best possible experience – and hopefully get some of them to take up the sport”, says Jesper Thorne, who is responsible for the DDU’s marketing and is a member of the board of directors of the DDU. “In the Danish Darts Union, we hope and believe that this deal can help attract interest towards our sport. We are looking forward to showing our fellow Danes and viewers globally, that darts is a serious sport that allows you to play socially in a team and where cooperation and team spirits are key issues.”
