The 2024 Winmau-Fleetwood Memorial Las Vegas Open has traversed a significant journey since its modest inception back in 1979. While it consistently drew top-tier American players, its status elevated notably in 1986 when the prize purse surged to $30,000. Over the years, American darting figures, such as former World Matchplay Champion Larry Butler and the late Stacy Bromberg, a revered Women’s World Champion in 2010, claimed the prestigious 501 singles title.
Before the onset of the pandemic, the Winmau Las Vegas Open regularly lured participants from across the globe. However, international participation dwindled notably in 2022 and 2023. The inclusion of both the Winmau Las Vegas Open WDF 501 singles and the Winmau Las Vegas Classic WDF 501 singles sparked a resurgence in global engagement.
Unlike many US darts tournaments that emphasize on-site registrations, the 2024 Las Vegas Open introduced pre-registration, garnering 47 early registrations, including notable players such as Deta Hedman, Fallon Sherrock, Cameron Menzies, and Simon Whitlock.
Following a lengthy and prosperous history, the pinnacle of the ADO’s tournament calendar this year reached new heights by hosting the WDF-ranked Silver event and adding Gold category singles. Boasting a total prize fund of $40,000, the tournament attracted players from beyond North America. Notably, players holding PDC tour cards did not partake in the WDF singles. However, this exclusion became a draw for US players, contributing to the growth of the American darts scene.
Overall, the Las Vegas Open had 780 players, and 3,743 matches. Brenda Roush, tournament director commented "Planning for a larger attendance in 2024, we increased our competition boards to 81. Still, with both Gold and Silver WDF singles events over the weekend, the numbers jumped wonderfully higher! We already have plans for a premier WDF Gold event next year with more dart boards, more staff and a few great surprises. We were honoured to host so many talented players, from such diverse countries across the globe."
