A fantastic turnout from the local population of Stanley for the FIC / Winmau darts tournament.
Paul Lewis, Retail Director of Falkland Islands Company Ltd stated;
‘The unique thing about the FIC tournament is that it is 301 double in format which makes it a very popular event and one which tends to have the most upsets as the pressure really mounts if your opponent gets off first throw!
We were guaranteed a new champion in the men’s tournament as soon as we got down to the semi-finals as all previous winners had early exits, in the end it was Roy Shepherd who triumphed with his first major final victory, one of many more to come.
Special mentions go to Richard Bonner who reached a major final for the first time and Geoff Greenough and Phil Kearney who picked up joint third both having an excellent run of darts on the night and ‘Fudge’ Smith who had performance of the night beating previous Champion ‘Tooty’ Ford in an early round.
It was just as exciting in the Ladies competition with Candy Blackley coming through as Champion in a hard fought final against Maggie Goss, joint third were Cherry Robson and Sharon Jaffray both regular podium finishers in this tournament.
Overall a great night was had by the 100+ entrants and the large crowd was as vocal and appreciative as ever.’
Andy Jones (Winmau Sales Manager) expressed his thanks to the Falkland Island Company Ltd for arranging such a great annual event and obviously to the darting community of the Falklands for making the event a success.
